Wednesday's Snowshoeing Schedule

2010 Arctic Winter Games Officially Underway with Sold Out Opening Ceremonies

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games are underway, in the Southern-most community to ever to host this biennial international celebration of sport and culture. Opening Ceremonies for the 21st set of Games were held Sunday, March 7 in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada.

During the first half of “A Hero’s Journey” the audience enjoyed a unique combination of cultural entertainment, showcasing the cultural diversity and youthful spirit of the community of Grande Prairie.

Troyanda Ukranian Dancers, Hoop-dancer Amanda Syryda, Grande Prairie Pipes & Drums, the Hero’s Journey Mass Choir, and the Games Cultural Ambassador Celeigh Cardinal performed during the first act for a suspiciously half-empty arena - before the second act saw over 2,000 athletes, cultural participants and coaches fill in the entire floor and a portion of the stands.

Opening Ceremonies are the official start to the Games, which also saw the start of athletic competition today on the soccer pitch. Sport results are available via the Games website. Monday, March 8 will see competition in 19 of the Games’ 21 sports, as well as the start of FREE Lunchtime Cultural Performances. Each of the nine international contingents will share the cultures of their homelands as they perform alongside local talent, Monday through Wednesday, 12:00-1:30 at Prairie Mall, Second Street Theatre, and the Games Trading Post.

For Games participants, the journey continues with six more days of athletic competition, social interaction, and cultural exchange before Closing Ceremonies, Saturday, March 13.

2010 Arctic Winter Games Meets Volunteer Recruitment Goals

With over 2,500 people registered to volunteer for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games the Grande Prairie Host Society has met their volunteer recruitment goal – and with less than a week before the Games get underway, organizers have shifted their focus to the important task of accreditation.

Director of Volunteers, Linda Craik says they're thrilled to have reached this important milestone, but the hard work is far from over. Dozens of volunteer Volunteer Coordinators have already spent a lot of time on the phone – calling everyone that's registered to ensure they have completed some crucial steps, and to schedule them for specific jobs and shifts.

"Only once you've cleared your RCMP Clearance, uploaded a photo, and been scheduled for jobs and shifts – can you come to a 'Volunteer Accreditation Day', where you will pick up your volunteer accreditation badge and uniform."

With two of four Accreditation Days completed, and hundreds of badges handed out, President Debbie Reid admits the accreditation process got off to a bit of a bumpy start, but she says the organization is dedicated to rectifying the situation.

"We have faced some challenges with the process, due partially to technical issues and partially because of the number of steps that are required prior to attending an Accreditation Day. But we know where the issues are and are working hard to get everyone to the stage where they can pick up their Accreditation Badge prior to the start of the Games. At this point we're asking our volunteers for a little patience and understanding." Reid says.

Organizers are encouraging those who haven't completed all the steps, or who aren't sure of their status to call 780-538-4777, or visit the Games Office in Ernie‟s Plaza. Remaining Accreditation Days will be held Saturday, February 27 from 10-4, and Tuesday, March 2 from 5-8, at Montrose Cultural Centre (the new library building).

President Debbie Reid admits feeling the swell of pride for these Games in our Community as people finalize their Games Volunteer experience. "We‟re starting to see people around town, not just in Gameswear – but in VOLUNTEER wear, and as the President of this volunteer-driven organization I can say it warms my heart."

Host Society Announces Celeigh Cardinal as Cultural Ambassador

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society have named singer / songwriter Celeigh Cardinal as the Cultural Ambassador for this unique celebration of northern culture.

Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Cardinal started singing at a very young age – learning pictures as cues for songs until she learned to read. As a young adult, her desire to pursue a career in music only grew stronger.

At 29, Celeigh Cardinal has now performed at hundreds of events and opened for such legends as the Beach Boys, and Buffy St. Marie. She has played with a number of bands and currently fronts an eclectic group of musicians with varied experience and influences, The Celeigh Cardinal Band explores rock, rhythm and blues to create an earthy, soulful musical experience.

Describing herself as ‘hardly an athlete,’ Cardinal says she was initially surprised when invited to be an ‘ambassador’ for the Games, but grew quite excited after learning more about the cultural component to the week-long event.

“Music, arts, crafts, food, fashion - this is where my heart feels at home.” Cardinal says, “I consider myself lucky to highlight the most unique parts of every individual – their culture! As a musician, and a Metis woman, I’ve always held strong to the richness of my heritage, making it a foundation to each of the many paths I’ve chosen to explore. It’s my hope that as Cultural Ambassador for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games I will have the opportunity to share the vibrant and energetic spirit of my people with those from within our region and around the world.”

2010 Host Society President Debbie Reid says Cardinal’s passion for her music and pride in her heritage made her an obvious choice to represent the Games’ unique cultural offerings, which include not only music, but visual, photographic, performance, and culinary art offerings as well.

The Hodgson Trophy

Ulus & Awards

For athletes at the Arctic Winter Games, there is no greater thrill than winning an ulu. The medal’s name and shape are borrowed from the all-purpose knife traditionally used by the Inuit. Ulus are awarded in bronze, silver, and gold; recognizing the hard work and commitment of athletes with a unique memento from the North.

For many of the sports featured in the Arctic Winter Games, medals are awarded at individual sport venues as winners are determined. Traditional ‘Medal Rounds’ will occur in only five of 21 sports; basketball, curling, hockey, soccer, and volleyball.

The Hodgson Trophy

Despite the obvious importance of a competitive spirit in athletic competitions, the Arctic Winter Games have always emphasized fair play over the need for victory. Since its introduction in 1978, the Hodgson Trophy symbolizes the ideals of fair play and team spirit, and is awarded to the participating contingent who best embodies those ideals. Team members also receive a unique pin in recognition of this accomplishment.

Donated by Commissioner Stuart Hodgson, this distinctive trophy is a one-of-a-kind piece of Inuit artwork from the Canadian Arctic. Its main feature is a six-foot high narwhal tusk mounted on a soapstone base and decorated with scrimshaw. A carved walrus wraps itself around the tusk at the base, and a carved bear clings to the tusk’s upper reaches, symbolizing the efforts of participants to reach for the top through their endeavors.

Votes from mission staff, registered coaches, major officials from each sport, Arctic Winter Games International Committee members, registered media, and the President, General Manager, and Sport Manager for the Host Society are tallied to award the trophy in a ceremony that highlights each Arctic Winter Games.

Prospective Games Volunteers Asked Not to Delay Registration

With just over three months until Grande Prairie hosts the 21st Arctic Winter Games, organizers are nearly half-way to filling the volunteer needs of this international celebration of sport and culture.

2,500 volunteers will make the Games happen in Grande Prairie, and with close to 1,200 registered to-date organizers say they’re happy with where they’re at, while recognizing the long way left to go.

Director of Volunteers Linda Craik says the biggest misconception with prospective volunteers is that there’s no rush to get their name down on paper.

“Every day I talk to at least one person who says ‘Absolutely I’m going to volunteer, I just haven’t registered yet.’ ” Craik says, “What we’re really trying to get across is the many things that have to be done behind the scenes between when you sign up and when you get your accreditation badge & schedule.”

Craik says RCMP clearances can take several weeks to process, not to mention the Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association training that’s provided free to every volunteer, or the specific training that may be required for specific roles and tasks.

“And in some cases there are only a few people required for a specific task.” She says, “Some committees are already contacting prospective volunteers based on their interests, either with pre-Games volunteer opportunities or to get people in place to fill their Games-time schedules.”

Craik says when the shifts are full, they’re full - so it’s important to register early, especially if you have a specific interest or are travelling a long distance, like those volunteering from our contingent regions.

A Week Full of Milestones Makes for a Weekend FULL of Celebration

A week full of milestones for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games will wrap up this Saturday with a HUGE community celebration from 10:00am-3:00pm at Montrose Cultural Centre.

The Volunteer Rally is the second of three that will be held by the Games’ Host Society prior to the Games, and Director of Volunteers Linda Craik says the event is meant to celebrate our existing volunteers as much as to recruit new ones!

“This week we reached a few major milestones: This Thursday marked exactly ONE HUNDRED days to the Games, and as if that wasn’t enough cause for celebration we’ve also registered our ONE-THOUSANDTH volunteer!” says Craik.

A total of 2,500 volunteers are needed to bring the Games to Grande Prairie, and Craik says although we still have a long way to go, this milestone certainly helps to prove what organizers have been saying all along; the people of Grande Prairie and area are committed to making these Games a reality for our community!

Craik says every volunteer that registers is just as important as the last, regardless of what number they are. But, she says there is something particularly noteworthy about our #1000. Having just moved to Grande Prairie, Timothy Way was looking for a way to get involved in his new community when the Games Crew visited his place of employment to conduct on-site volunteer registration. He signed up that day, showing his commitment to the community after only one week of calling Grande Prairie home.

Games President Debbie Reid says it’s exactly that sense of community that is exemplified by our volunteers. “Although the majority of volunteers are needed for work DURING the Games, many of those that registered early are already getting involved, by donating their time to help with pre-Games events like parades, community displays, and events like this weekend’s Volunteer Rally.”

Craik says whether you’re planning to register at the rally or you’re one of the many volunteers already helping to make these games a success, EVERYONE IS WELCOME at the celebration this Saturday.

Ticket Sale Update

After just a few weeks of ticket sales for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games organizers are encouraged by the interest this milestone has generated in the community.

Residents have known the Games were coming, and have likely been planning to attend this international celebration for some time, says Ticket Chair Heidi Yang, but there’s a thrill that comes from actually holding the tickets in your hands.

Yang says it’s this thrill many people are hoping to bring to the holidays, by loading up at the box office this Christmas. She says the Games guarantee opportunities for unique family fun, while still keeping ticket prices reasonable.

“Games tickets make a perfect Christmas gift, and with the cost of daily sports passes comparable to the cost of a trip to the movies we’re seeing a lot of tickets purchased as family stocking stuffers - or even as gifts for teachers, coaches or colleagues,” Yang says.

She says price was a big factor when finalizing the ticket plan. The committee did considerable research to ensure ticket prices weren’t a barrier for anyone wishing to attend the Games. The result is families embracing the Games, and are making plans to share in the sports and cultures of the circumpolar North.

Even the four SPECTACULAR cultural events held during the Games are priced at less than $50 each. Tickets for the Games’ Opening and Closing Ceremonies have been the biggest sellers to-date, with those for Thursday & Friday’s Cultural Galas not far behind.

Yang says it’s the social interaction and cultural exhibition between contingents that reflects the true uniqueness of these Games, and that is most evident during ceremonies and galas. Assigned seating is in place for each of these dynamic events, with a limited number of tickets available for each.

The Arctic Winter Games international committee requires some tickets to be held back for international guests, further limiting the number of tickets available to the general public. As a result, Yang says those interested in attending should act quickly to avoid disappointment.

Games’ Mascot Welcomes Beckie Scott to Grande Prairie

November 22, 2009 - Two-time Olympic medalist, Beckie Scott joined over 70 aspiring young cross-country skiers and coaches from Northern Alberta in Grande Prairie this weekend, as part of the Beckie Scott Youth Ambassador program made possible through the support of Statoil Canada Ltd.

Canada’s most famous cross-country skier, Scott participated in training sessions proudly hosted by a 2010 Arctic Winter Games Venue: Wapiti Nordic Ski Club.

Training covered on snow technique work, fitness and conditioning exercises and a comprehensive seminar schedule, culminating with an evening presentation by Scott. In the presentation, held at Peace Wapiti Academy, Canada’s most accomplished cross country skier spoke on the many issues impacting young skiers, including her own experiences growing up in rural Alberta as an elite athlete with an Olympic Dream.

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games mascot joined in the fun Sunday, for one of the final relays of the weekend. Aluk, a one-year-old pachyrhinosaurus strapped on skis for the very first time and took some pointers from one of the best!

2010 ARCTIC WINTER GAMES FEATURE - Volunteer Update

After the buzz created last week when the Olympic Torch Relay passed through our region on its way to Vancouver, the thoughts of many have drifted to our OWN International Celebration of Sport and Culture being held March 6-13, 2010 right here in Grande Prairie!

2,500 star volunteers will help to showcase our community to the world, and with just four months left to go organizers have 926 registered.

Director of Volunteers, Linda Craik says although it seems like there’s still lots of time – in reality there’s not.

“Our registration process is really sophisticated. There are a few steps, but it allows us to ensure that volunteers are assigned to divisions and tasks that they enjoy, while also ensuring everyone – young, old, participants, volunteers, and spectators – are kept safe”.

All volunteers are required to complete an RCMP clearance allowing them to work with vulnerable sectors like children and seniors. Craik says there is no cost to the volunteer, but because of the processing time required it’s highly recommended that ALL volunteers register by January 1, 2010 in order to ensure their clearance is received in time for the Games.

Even once the accreditation process is complete she says the work is far from over, with scheduling and training to follow. In addition to any training required for their specific tasks, ALL Arctic Winter Games volunteers will receive FREE customer service training by the Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association.

“In addition to being a great opportunity for athletic competition, cultural exchange and social interaction, the AHLA training provided to our volunteers provides a whole new element of personal & professional development.” Craik says it’s been a great incentive for employers to encourage their employees to get involved.

2010 Arctic Winter Games Ticket Sale Launch

After almost two years of preparations, residents and visitors will soon be able to solidify their plans to attend the 2010 Arctic Winter Games - but organizers say they’ll have to move fast!

Tickets for this international celebration of sport and culture go on sale Monday morning at 10:00am at the Crystal Centre Box Office.

With a limited number of tickets available, Ticket Chair Heidi Yang says Opening & Closing Ceremonies and the two Cultural Galas are expected to sell out shortly after the launch. Yang strongly recommends that people purchase these tickets quickly, as seat selection will be at a premium.

With an event of this magnitude, Yang says there’s no such thing as a small task. This theory was proven correct through the many hours spent reviewing schedules, VIP lists and seating capacities in preparation for the ticket sale launch.

“The sport schedules alone are intense, with seven days of competition in 21 sports,” says Yang. “When you add to that some of the unique cultural elements of the Games, like Opening & Closing Ceremonies, and two spectacular cultural galas, the event becomes much more than your typical set of Games.”

Yang says ticket options will allow spectators to customize their Games experience, with individual tickets sold for ceremonies and cultural galas. Once sport schedules are finalized, she says Sports Super Passes, Day Passes and tickets for Medal Rounds will be available to those intent on catching all the athletic elements of these unique circumpolar games.

Host Society Welcomes Chefs de Mission for Final Pre-Games Visit

The Grande Prairie 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society reaches another milestone this week, with the arrival of the Chefs de Mission for their final pre-Games visit to our region.

Representatives from the nine circumpolar regions that will participate in the Games arrive in Grande Prairie starting today.

Acting as liaisons between Games organizers and the athletes & cultural participants of their contingent, the 15 Chefs de Mission and Assistant Chefs de Mission will visit many of the venues which will host Games events.

During this final visit, particular attention will be paid to the care and comfort of participants. This means a number of venue tours, as well as a review of the plans for transportation, food services, health, and safety of over 2,000 participants during the Games.

The visit will include two full days of meetings as well as opportunities for the Chefs to meet many of the volunteer Directors, Assistant Directors and Chairs of the Host Society, who are responsible for much of the planning of these volunteer-driven Games.

The Chefs de Mission visited Grande Prairie at this time last year, and President Debbie Reid says this visit is our opportunity to show them the progress that’s been made in what felt like a very short year.

“Their last visit was really our chance to show them our plans, to outline the many things we hoped to put in place to make these Games a success. This visit is our time to shine, to show them how those plans have been implemented.” She says this visit will display our readiness to play host to the circumpolar North.

The Grande Prairie 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society is celebrating National Family Week October 4-10, by encouraging FAMILY participation in this international celebration of sport and culture!

These youth-focused Games maintain their relevance with young people by reaching beyond the over 2,000 Northern participants and encouraging volunteerism with youth of the same age.

Volunteer opportunities are available for those as young as 12, with some tasks designated as Youth Positions.

At a time like National Family Week the focus of many parents shifts towards activities that involve and engage the whole family – an event like the 2010 Arctic Winter Games is a FANTASTIC opportunity to do just that!

Remember – kids are out of school the week of the Games, making it even easier for families to spend time together while supporting this unique international event.

There are also many opportunities for family involvement prior to the Games; with promotional displays, volunteer rallies, and the upcoming Santa Claus parade.

One of the things we notice at events like these is that ‘Games’ activities are quickly becoming ‘family’ activities, with whole families coming out to carry flags along a parade route, or mom staffing a promotional display for an afternoon while the kids hand out tattoos, and dad hangs out with Mascot Aluk for the day.

2010 Arctic Winter Games Sports Ambassador Ryan Blais welcomed a familiar face to his hometown this week.

Blais' Canadian National Freestyle Teammate Warren Shouldice was in Grande Prairie this week, filming a segment for Bravo! Canada. The series will feature sport footage put to music, with Shouldice representing Freestyle Skiing.

The 2010 Games in Grande Prairie will be the first Arctic Winter Games to feature Freestyle Skiing. Competition will take place at Nitehawk Recreation Area; Sports Ambassador Ryan Blais' hometown hill, and home to the Water Ramp which was used to shoot Shouldice's television segment.

Cultural Program Takes Centre Stage

By now, most local residents are aware that the Arctic Winter Games are coming to Grande Prairie, but how many of us REALLY know what the Games’ are all about?

Of course, Sport is a huge part of the Arctic Winter Games, with young athletes competing in dozens of Indoor and Outdoor Sports, including several Arctic Sports and Dene Games. But sport is just one component of this international celebration of sport and culture.

The Arctic Winter Games foster athletic competition, social interaction and cultural exchange for over 2,000 participants from across the circumpolar North. In addition to their athletes, each contingent also brings cultural representatives & programs to share the food, fashion, visual, performing and photographic arts from their communities.

As host to these unique Games, Grande Prairie will see this cultural exhibition and exchange first-hand, while also having the opportunity to share our Northern Alberta culture. The Games cultural program has many facets, including spectacular Opening & Closing Ceremonies.

Titled “A Hero’s Journey” the Opening & Closing ceremonies for the Games will link the teachings & traditions of the original people of the circumpolar world with the modern multicultural realities of today’s North. Ceremonies programs incorporate the philosophies of the modern ‘Virtues Project’ while keeping participants entertained through music, dancing, original character costumes, unique staging & multimedia elements.

We are currently seeking groups and individuals interested in performing during the Games Cultural Programs:
- Performers will be needed for Opening & Closing Ceremonies or a series of lunch-time performances
- Interested parties are asked to create a pieces that will WOW athletes & audiences
- Submissions should be 3 ½ minutes for Opening & Closing Ceremonies, 10-15 minutes for lunch performances

2010 Arctic Winter Games Hosts First Volunteer Rally

With only six months until the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie, organizers are stepping up Volunteer recruitment.

The Host Society will hold their first of three Volunteer Rallies this Saturday as a part of the City of Grande Prairie’s Community Connections event at Montrose Cultural Centre.

Director of Volunteers & Protocol, Linda Craik says the annual city event is the perfect venue for bringing the Games message to the masses.

“People in the City of Grande Prairie and surrounding areas see this event as their best chance to see what kind of leisure activities and opportunities for community involvement exist for them in Grande Prairie. We’ll be there to show them the MANY opportunities available with the Games,” Craik says.

The Games are a huge event for our community, she says, and they simply CANNOT happen without volunteers. In fact, 2,500 volunteers are required to make the Games a reality for Grande Prairie.

Close to 600 people are already registered, and with preparations well underway she says there is no shortage of tasks to keep them busy.
“These people really exemplify the enthusiasm and dedication that will make these Games a success. They’re the folks that heard the Games were coming and immediately made a commitment to be a part of it.”

Craik says that core group has been a major force in promoting the Games throughout the region - encouraging others to be involved through promotional displays, on-site volunteer registration stations, and many, many community parades. Games President Debbie Reid agrees, saying it’s the people that make the difference.

“This is exactly the type of teamwork that will lead us to true success as we near the Games” Reid says.

Just six months before the 2010 Arctic Winter Games come to Grande Prairie, organizers are encouraging area residents to start showing their support, with Arctic Winter Games merchandise!

Director of Administration for the Games, Mike Reid says although a limited selection of Games Gear was available previously, the Grand Opening Celebration commemorates several exciting changes - including a new look, extended hours, and new items for the Games Store.

Reid says like the Games themselves, the success of the merchandise program depends heavily on community involvement.

"The Games Crew has been all over the Peace Country, talking to people, showing what the Games Store has to offer and asking what people want to see - and a lot of those ideas have translated into what you see in the store today." Reid says a few of the new items include moisture wicking t-shirts, baby bibs, track suits, sweat pants, even portable flash drives and Aluk ‘action figures’. Aluk, a pachyrhinosaurus dinosaur discovered in the area, is the mascot for the upcoming Games.

Reid says that as the Games get closer and more people come on board, the demand for Games Gear grows. When those supporters can find Gameswear they really LIKE they’re more likely to wear it, advertising their involvement and encouraging others to get involved.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony held Friday, September 4 kicked off a weekend full of family activities at the Games Store, now open Thursdays and Fridays until 9:00 pm, Saturdays from 10:00 am-6:00 pm, and Sundays and holidays 12:00 pm-5:00 pm, in Ernie’s Sports Plaza.

2010 Arctic Winter Games Mascot Discovers Ancient Family History

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games mascot got a first-hand history lesson recently. Aluk, the young Pachyrhinosaurus met with visiting palaeontologists on the banks of the Wapiti River and witnessed a portion of the excavation of the Wapiti River Bone Bed.

Researchers from the University of Alberta and Grande Prairie Regional College excavated several large bone blocks. The two-week dig was led by world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Philip Currie, and wrapped up Friday with the helicopter airlift of two enormous Pachyrhinosaurus skulls.

The Wapiti River site is the second Pachyrhinosaurus bone bed to be discovered in Grande Prairie. The first was opened in 1983 and yielded a new species of Pachyrhinosaurus (Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai). The bone beds have become so popular with local residents that many consider Pachyrhinosaurus 'their' regional dinosaur.

Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games, Joanne Ballance says that sense of ownership has ensured a warm welcome for the Games mascot in the Grande Prairie region.

"The prominence of similar bone beds through North America’s higher latitudes makes the pachyrhinosaur a fabulous ambassador that speaks not only to the history of our local region, but brings to light a common thread between some of the Northern regions participating in the Arctic Winter Games" said Ballance.

Scott Persons is one of several students working with Dr. Currie on the project. A native of North Carolina, Persons is now entering his second year of a Masters of Paleontology at the University of Alberta.

“I was surprised when I heard the pachyrhinosaur had been chosen as the Games mascot. Although the scientific importance of Pachyrhinosaurus has been known in the professional realm for a long time, it is not a famous dinosaur as far as the public goes.” Persons said, "but pachyrhinos are cool critters and they are definitely iconic to Grande Prairie. So, I hope Aluk’s popularity will also help promote the amazing paleontological work that has been done in this region and help generate support for all the work that still has to be done."

Cultural organizers of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie are building momentum by announcing the winner of their Theme Song Competition.

In an effort to capture the International flavor of these unique Northern Games, the competition invited entries from anyone who has spent more than five years living North of the 55th parallel. After careful consideration of the many entries received, the selection committee decided on Grande Prairie’s own Kerry Hesse (nee Biegel) as the winning songwriter.

“As a songwriter, this was an opportunity for me to be a part of something that was so much bigger than myself,” says Hesse “I wrote the words to inspire and encourage people to give it their all and be the best that they can be.”

Hesse is from a musically talented family with deep roots in the Peace Region. Director of Culture Jackie Clayton says the selection committee was very impressed with Hesse’s entry entitled ‘Rise Up’.

“Kerry’s entry really exemplified the message we were hoping to get across with our Theme Song. We know that it will do a great job of inspiring the over 2,000 participants coming to Grande Prairie for the Games, as well as our local community in the eight months until we get there.” Clayton says the song speaks to the many ways individuals can ‘Rise Up’ and show their pride for sport, culture, and community.

In keeping with the youth focus of the Games, Wayne Ayling, Chair of Opening and Closing Ceremonies was tasked with ensuring the arrangement of the song had strong appeal to young people. Ayling looked to Shane Seward, a young musician heavily involved with the local music scene to involve other young artisits and come up with the arrangement of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games rock anthem.

The song will be featured at many events leading up to and during the Games - including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. It will be arranged for acoustic guitar, rock band, and choir. A wide variety of singers will be enlisted to perform the song.

Arctic Winter Games International Committee Visits Grande Prairie

Just over eight months from the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie members of the organization’s International Committee will visit the region this week to check in with the 2010 Host Society.

Representatives from Alaska, Greenland, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and the Yukon will join those from Northern Alberta to tour some of the new sport facilities that will be used in 2010, and meet dozens of the volunteers and staff that will make the Games a reality in our community.

This is the fourth of six visits scheduled by the International Committee to track the planning in each host community. Their busy three day visit will include a full day of presentations by various divisions within the organization.

Peace Region’s Elected Officials to Participate in Arctic Sports Competition

Volunteers from the 2010 Arctic Winter Games will lead many of the region’s elected officials in some friendly competition Tuesday, June 16th at the City of Grande Prairie’s Municipal Government Day celebrations in Muskoseepi Park.

Elected officials from seven neighboring municipalities will participate in four activities, all of which will be featured in the 2010 Arctic Winter Games, coming to Grande Prairie March 6-13, 2010.

Alaskan High Kick
The athlete supports himself/herself on the ground with one hand while grasping one foot with the other hand. The athlete must use his / her free foot to kick a target
suspended overhead before landing on the kicking foot.

Sledge Jump
Ten wooden sledges are placed in a row. The athlete jumps over as many as possible before fatigue forces him / her to stop. The athlete may only execute two-foot jumps,
and the feet may not be placed further apart than shoulder-wide.

Stick Pull
Competitors stand in a staggered stance facing each other, gripping a Crisco-greased stick. At the judge’s signals competitors grip the stick, then begin pulling away from
their competitor with a straight arm and in a slow and steady fashion. Best-of-three wins it.

Pole Push
Two teams of four players each grasp opposite ends of a 6-8 meter pole. The teams attempt to push each other out of a 10 metre circle. A team wins the round when it
succeeds in pushing the centre mark of the pole across the boundary line. Best-ofthree wins it.

The ‘competition’ for elected officials will run from 4:30-5:00pm, with members of the public encouraged to try their hand at these unique Arctic Sports following the City’s official welcome around 5:00.

Gameswear Fridays to be Launched with the City & County of Grande Prairie

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games will launch the Gameswear Fridays program next week, with Funding Partners the City of Grande Prairie and County of Grande Prairie being the first to confirm their support.

Members of the Games Host Society will be joined by City Aldermen and County Councilors for the announcement, happening Monday, June 15th, 9:00am at the County office. Elected officials will be the first to don their Gameswear in support of the program, but Director of Administration for the Games, Mike Reid says that’s just the beginning.

“As a supporter of our Gameswear Friday program our Funding Partners, and ALL Games sponsors, are eligible to receive a discount on bulk Gameswear purchases. These savings can be passed along to their staff, encouraging them to show their support for the Games by proudly wearing their Gameswear at work every Friday between now and the Games”.

Reid says the City and County are both shining examples of how Games pride can be encouraged in a work-place. But, he says community support for the Games reaches well beyond our municipal governments to businesses of all sizes.

“The Gameswear Friday campaign is a great way for the public to easily identify those businesses that have already made a commitment to supporting this unique sporting and cultural event. And if it encourages others to get involved, that’s even better” he says.

Mayor Dwight Logan was the first to purchase his 2010 Arctic Winter Games vest, which will be officially presented to him, along with the rest of City and County elected officials at their respective council meetings Monday.

Games Launches 2010 Campaign to Encourage Small Business Support

With just over nine months until the Games, the 2010 Host Society is stepping up their sponsorship drive, with an initiative specifically targeting small businesses.

The '2010 Campaign' was officially launched this week, with organizers announcing several businesses that have already committed to the campaign.

Chair of Sponsorship, Linda Side says the campaign is a simple, affordable way for businesses to invest in the legacy of developing athletes. She says they've tried to make it as easy as possible for businesses to get on board and support the Games.

“This initiative allows small businesses that are making contributions of $2010 or more to choose a pre-authorized payment plan that suits their schedule. We've had a tremendous response from the community already, and we're confident that the flexibility of the 2010 Campaign will encourage even more support from the region's small businesses.”

The community of Grande Prairie has a history of supporting developing athletes, something the Arctic Winter Games 2010 Sports Ambassador has seen first-hand. “I've seen what happens when a community comes together to support its athletes. I know the difference their support has made to me, and the difference a Games experience can make in the lives of its participants,” said local aerialist and Olympic hopeful Ryan Blais.

2010 Arctic Winter Games Sports Ambassador featured in Provincial Tourism Video

Local aerialist, Olympic hopeful, and Sports Ambassador for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games, Ryan Blais has been chosen to represent Alberta‟s North in a promotional video for Travel Alberta.

The video, entitled 'Follow Your Passion to Alberta, features a representative from each of the provinces five regions. Blais was chosen because of the passion he displays for his sport and his community.

The video made its debut to the world at a media event in New York City just over a month ago. The event was hosted by Travel Alberta in an effort to encourage tourists to visit the province.

Back at home, the 2010 Arctic Winter Games committee was paying close attention.

“We're thrilled that Ryan was chosen to represent the North. The passion he shows for his sport, and for the Grande Prairie region, is one of the reasons we invited him to be the Games' Sports Ambassador. So it's certainly no surprise to us that when Travel Alberta was looking for a passionate, inspiring person from the North, that they chose him,” said Games President Debbie Reid.

Throughout his career, Blais has been an active promoter of Alberta's North, taking every opportunity to mention the individuals, businesses and even local facilities that combined with his tremendous talent to help him excel.

As he mentions in the video, “The winters are long and cold, but the people are warm and that's usually what keeps people around, and keeps them coming back to Northern Alberta.” Blais says that was also a factor in why he took the role as Sports Ambassador for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. “It's a chance to promote our region, and welcome an International audience to visit our community and see first-hand the spirit of our people.”

National Championship Win for Arctic Winter Games Sports Ambassador

Grande Prairie, Alberta - Following the first National Championship win of his career, Grande Prairie aerialist Ryan Blais is home celebrating with family, friends – and organizers of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

Supporters of the Games in Grande Prairie were keeping a close eye on last weekend’s competition, hoping for the best for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Sports Ambassador.

Blais, Canadian Freestyle Team member and Olympic hopeful, posted his highest score of the year at the competition, held at Cypress Mountain near Vancouver. Blais’ track-record at the 2010 Olympic venue is encouraging, as it was also the site of his second-highest score this season.

2010 Arctic Winter Games President Debbie Reid says no matter what the next year holds, Ryan has already proven to be a great ambassador for the Arctic Winter Games.

“Many of the developing athletes that participate in these games have similar goals to what Ryan’s would have been 10 years ago. This is their first opportunity to compete at an international level, and many of them are hoping for personal bests and podium finishes on their way to fulfilling bigger dreams,” said Reid.

“Over the years Ryan has shown tremendous dedication to his sport. He is a real life example that when you dream big you can achieve greatness!”

Blais’ top two scores will be combined with his top two from next season to determine whether he will compete in the Vancouver Olympics being held in February 2010. Only two weeks later, the focus of the circumpolar world will shift North, to the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie.

Grande Prairie, Alberta - Members of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee are in Grande Prairie this Wednesday to Saturday for their second visit during the planning of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

President Debbie Reid says there are many new developments to share and the progress has been positive and steady.

“We are proud of our dedicated sport and committee chairs. They are ready to showcase the progress we have made to date and to work with the International Committee to obtain their feedback and gather more information on how to finalize the details."

Foremost on their agenda is presentations by the local host society on plans for sports, facilities, culture, and care and comfort of participants. This visit will include the opportunity to review proposed plans for the Athletes Village, as well as security, food services, transportation, medical needs and ceremonies.

The international delegates will represent most of the participating sport and cultural contingents that will be in attendance at the 2010 Games, including Northwest Territories, Alaska, Yukon, Nunavut, Nunavik (Quebec), Northern Alberta, Greenland, Yamal-Nenets (Russia), and Sami (Norway/Sweden/Finland/Russia).

Excitement Heating Up as Canadian Rocker Colin James Celebrates this Weekend with the Arctic Winter Games Grande Prairie, Alberta – With only a few days until Canada’s own Colin James is in the city to celebrate with the 2010 Arctic Winter Games, excitement is growing. James is in the City this Saturday, March 28 for a 2010 Arctic Winter Games dine and dance and auction. The event will be held in a ballroom at the Evergreen Park TEC Centre.

Tickets that include a personal meet and greet with James are already sold out. Some tickets can still be purchased for the dinner and dance featuring the music of Colin James. Due to high demand, 100 tickets have been released just for the show.

The Canadian singer, guitarist and songwriter appeals to a variety of international audiences and musiclovers, playing in the blues, rock and swing genres. Also joining James will be seven members of his band who have played with many of the industry’s greats including the Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton.

The evening will include a unique cultural component featuring aboriginal dancing. A live and silent auction will showcase paintings, sculptures, and art objects from Nunavik, Nunavut, Yukon, Northern Alberta, Greenland, Russia, and the Northwest Territories. Also to be auctioned off is a guitar signed by Colin James, as well as an Okanagan Resort package, which includes a spa, golf, winery tour, and dinner.

Wanted: Volunteers for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games!

Grande Prairie, Alberta – Online volunteer sign-up has been officially launched and open to the public and the 2010 Arctic Winter Games is calling for 2,500 “ready able and willing” volunteers to participate in next year’s international sport and cultural event.

“We have a variety of areas where volunteers are needed, so there is something that will appeal to everyone,” said Linda Craik, Director of Volunteers and Protocol for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. “Online registration makes it easy for people to sign-up right from their own homes and workplaces.”

Craik said volunteers are needed in all areas including translation services, special guest services, sport venues, transportation, food services, and security just to name a few. Russian and Greenlandic language volunteers are the most sought after translators for the Games.

All volunteers will receive training through the Service Best Program. Craik said this program, offered by the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association, provides excellent training in hospitality and customer services. Craik said that while the Host Society wants to ensure visitors receive the best in customer service throughout their visit to our Games, employers are going to reap the longterm benefits.

“Service Best training will help to ensure that we are providing our visitors with a high level of service and hospitality throughout the Games,” said Craik. “But employers whose employees take this volunteer training are going to see long-term rewards, with well-trained, competent staff.”

Craik said that she has fielded a number of calls from interested individuals living outside of Alberta who plan to come to Grande Prairie to participate as volunteers.

“There are a number of people who have volunteered at previous Games who said that the experience was so exciting and rewarding that they are preparing to travel to Grande Prairie to volunteer in 2010,” said Craik.

2010 Arctic Winter Games Hosts One-Year-Out Celebration

Grande Prairie, Alberta - With only one year left, the countdown is on for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. The 2010 Games celebrated by hosting an indoor and outdoor event for the family today in Grande Prairie, the host city for next year’s Games.

“Less than a year from today, about 2000 participants representing nine contingents will come to our city for an international sport competition and a friendly exchange of cultural values,” said Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

“These Games are already in motion. Athletes are training, performers are rehearsing, our team is planning, and our community and region are preparing to showcase all we have to offer.”

Those attending the afternoon event had the opportunity to view and try out some traditional aboriginal sports. For many, this was their first time seeing some of the Arctic and Dene sports featured in the Games, such as the snow snake, Arctic High Kick, and stick pull.

The celebration also featured a number of cultural performances including singers, aboriginal dancers, and the local band, the Astronotes, whose three young members were Team Alberta’s Cultural Contingent at the 2008 Games in Yellowknife.

There was also an opportunity to sample variety of cultural foods, including bison, which is raised in the area, and purchase local handicrafts.

During a short program, Reid announced the name 2010 Arctic Winter Games mascot, which was introduced to the public late last year. The pachyrhinosaurus dinosaur, which was introduced to the public late last year, was named Aluk (pronounced A-luke). The name was inspired by local school teacher, Al Lakusta, who discovered pachyrhinosaurus fossils in what would become a world-renowned fossil bed just west of Grande Prairie.

Reid said inspiration for name also came from its Arctic references – Aluk is a breed of Alaskan Malamute, as well as the name of an island in the Arctic.

Aluk kicked off the online volunteer sign-up program, which went live today to the public. Several volunteers were already signing up at the event to take part in next year’s Games.

Reid then was pulled on a dog sled from the College through Muskoseepi Park to take part in the outdoor festivities. Dog mushing is one of the 21 sports that will be featured at the 2010 Games.

Biathlon Race and 2010 Arctic Winter Games Test Event Goes this Weekend

Media and the public are invited attend the Calforex Cup #4 Biathlon Competition. This will be an individual and sprint competition. Racing starts at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 7th and 10:30 AM Sunday, February 8th.

We are arranging for photo ops from strategic locations on Sunday. Media can arrive by 10:30 AM, as there will be several heats of about 20 minutes each. We will arrange for interviews at that time as well. April Weavell will be available to meet any media in attendance.

Go past the lodge, travel up the hill to the quonset on the right – this is the location of the sprint competition on Sunday.

Grande Prairie - Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society gave accolades to the local businesses and community volunteers for their generous contributions toward the new Games office and store. Reid announced that the new Games office and store facility, along with all the set-up costs including wiring, phones, construction and furnishings were provided through donations and sponsorship.

"The support that our organization has received to open this office and store is overwhelming," said Reid. "Our business community stepped up so generously and so willingly, and our volunteers worked tirelessly painting and scrubbing and preparing for this day. The Arctic Winter Games is both proud and humbled to announce that we are able to set-up the office and store free of any cash outlay to our organization.

When you experience this type of commitment, you really have to appreciate how fortunate we are to live among people who care so much about their community."

Reid made the announcement at today's grand opening of the new Arctic Winter Games office and store, located at Ernie's Sports Plaza. The store will be open with limited hours for the sale of 2010 Games merchandise. The first line of merchandise is also available to order online through the Games website.

Local government representatives were on hand for the grand opening and for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Assisting Reid with cutting the ribbon to officially mark the opening were City of Grande Prairie Mayor Dwight Logan, County of Grande Prairie Councilor Leanne Beaupre and M.D. of Greenview Councilor Lesley Vandemark.

Members of the 2010 Host Society also expressed appreciation to the newest sponsors of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. These sponsors were recognized for their contributions to the new office and store, as well as to the Games, which will held in our city next March.

Grande Prairie, Canada - An Arctic Winter Games cultural representative from the Nordic Institute of Greenland, Mr. Anders Berndtsson, is in Grande Prairie on a three-day visit to view the cultural facilities that will be used during the 2010 Games, and to see first-hand the framework of the cultural component of the 2010 Games. He will also be meeting with members of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society.

The Sports Federation of Greenland has selected the Institute to provide all the cultural contribution from Greenland to the 2010 Games. Berndtsson and his cultural institution have, with huge success, produced the Greenlandic cultural contribution both at the 2006 Arctic Winter Games in Kenai, Alaska and the 2008 Yellowknife Games in the North West Territories.

"Many of us from Grande Prairie who were at the 2008 Games in Yellowknife had the privilege of seeing Greenland's cultural performance," said Jackie Clayton, cultural director for the 2010 Games. "We are definitely looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us at next year's Games." Berndtsson says plans are underway for the Greenlandic production for the gala events in 2010, and will consist of a fusion between Greenlandic choir traditions and South African choir traditions. "Greenland believes it is very important for the young cultural participants to have the opportunity to go through a professional creative process prior the Games," said Berndtsson." A professional artistic leader, choreographer, and light and sound designer are hired in Greenland for the production that will be held in Grande Prairie."

The Nordic Institute of Greenland is a cultural institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers and is based in Nuuk, Greenland. NAPA is part of the active cultural life in Greenland and gives opportunities to experience Nordic culture in Greenland and Greenlandic culture in Scandanavian countries. One of NAPA's priority areas is to support, stimulate and contribute to the development of Greenlandic culture through its own cultural projects, with an emphasis on children's and youth culture.

General Manager for 2010 Arctic Winter Games Announced

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games and Grande Prairie Regional College are pleased to announce the appointment of François Fournier as General Manager of the Games to be held in Grande Prairie in March, 2010.

Fournier is the Athletic Director in the department of Physical Education, Athletics and Kinesiology at GPRC, and has been released from that position to fulfill this role for 2010 Arctic Winter Games. GPRC allowed its staff to apply for the 18-month position as part of the college’s
commitment to support the host committee. The City of Grande Prairie offered the same opportunity.

“François brings to our Games extensive knowledge and experience in sports and sport-based volunteer organizations locally and at a national and international level,” said Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. “That combined with his “get it done” attitude and the
relationships that he has built up over the years within the sport community really make him an excellent addition to our team.

“Securing an individual with François’ level of expertise for an 18-month period was certainly facilitated by the overwhelming support and commitment extended to the Games by the College and the City.”

“GPRC is proud to be a resource for our community as we prepare to host athletes and cultural participants of the circumpolar countries,” said Don Gnatiuk, president of Grande Prairie Regional College. “We recognize that this position requires a highly qualified individual who would be difficult to recruit for a short term appointment. Giving our employees the opportunity to apply for the position without risking their College jobs is part of our ongoing support for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

“I congratulate François on this appointment, and also congratulate the Games host committee on their selection of a highly effective manager with vast athletic experience.”

François Fournier has had extensive experience in athletic and events management nationally and internationally. He has worked in the promotion of professional football teams, and at the College has worked in enrolment management, public relations, and fundraising prior to his current position as Athletic Director. In 2007, Fournier was named Athletic Director of the Year by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association.

“The timing of this opportunity was good,” Fournier said of his decision to seek the General Manager position. “Many long-term plans have been put into motion for Athletics at the College, and I will return in time to put them into action. Meanwhile, I have been involved with the 2010 Arctic Winter Games since Grande Prairie was awarded the Games, and I am looking forward to this opportunity to give the event my full attention.

There will be free hot chocolate and cookies, colouring activities, an Arctic Sport demonstration and a chance to find out how you can volunteer for this international sport and cultural event, to be held in our city from March 6-13, 2010.

You’ll also get a chance to take your picture with the Arctic Winter Games pachyrhinosuarus mascot and Grande Prairie’s newest citizen. The dinosaur mascot was “hatched” from an egg at last Sunday’s Storm Game. Submissions for a name for the 2010 Games mascot are welcome at Sunday’s Warm-Up event or by logging in online at www.awg2010.org.

The Arctic Winter Games is a high profile sport competition and cultural event for northern athletes and performers. Since their inception in 1970, the Games now include participants from Alaska, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, northern Alberta, northern Quebec (Nunavik), the Russian province of Yamal, Greenland, and the Sami people of Norway and Finland. Grande Prairie will be the southern-most city to host the Games, to be held from March 6-13, 2010.

The 2010 Arctic Winter Games are a participant focused circumpolar celebration of sport and culture, inspiring a legacy of individual and community growth.

Grande Prairie will be the most southern community to ever host the Games, which are held biennielly and feature competitors & performers from North of the 55th parallel. Participating contingents for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie include:
